‘Who in their right mind would want to do 100 pull ups a day for a full week?’ That was the question I should have asked myself before I attempted this home workout challenge. Alas, as always, instead of rationally thinking things through, I just went for it, right after I returned from my holiday in English-seaside-town-turned-watery-art-emporium, Margate. I have no regrets, though, as I’m really happy I completed the challenge: I have never felt as strong as I do now, over 600 pull ups later (minus the sore palms).

There are reasons why I wanted to do the 100 pull ups a day for a week challenge, the main one being that I still can’t do muscle ups. For those who don’t know, a muscle up involves pulling yourself up on the bar, then pushing up and over it. It’s a little like getting out of a swimming pool, but without the assistance of water. Or having to pull yourself over a high wall, because you are being chased by robot dogs. Whatever you compare them to, muscle ups are notoriously hard and require explosive power – something I couldn’t acquire by just doing a few sets of pull ups a week.
